Crawl space dehumidifier cost and sizing
A crawl-space dehumidifier is usually sold as an installed equipment package—not a portable retail box dropped on the dirt. MoistureCost prices the installed retail package inside full encapsulation (and as an explicit add-on elsewhere). Sizing guidance below is editorial; the cost model does not auto-size pints by square footage.
A crawl-space dehumidifier installed package typically plans at $1,200–$2,800, with a mid scenario near $1,800. Adding a dedicated outlet often brings the combined typical near $2,250 (MoistureCost model 1.0.0). This is equipment pricing—not a full encapsulation total.

Installed package vs unit-only price
Online product prices for crawl-rated units often omit labor, condensate routing, a dedicated outlet, and commissioning. MoistureCost’s dehumidifier line is an installed retail package (equipment + basic install) and is not marked up again through contractor overhead. A separate dedicated-outlet allowance covers basic electrical—not a full panel upgrade.
If a quote lists only a big-box dehumidifier SKU, ask whether install, drain, and electrical are included.
Planning cost ranges (model v1.0.0)
The installed dehumidifier package in the rate book spans roughly $1,200 low to $2,800 high, with a typical near $1,800 before a dedicated outlet. Adding a typical outlet allowance brings the combined equipment-related typical near $2,250 for planning. These dollars appear inside full-encapsulation totals; they are not a substitute for a sealed assembly.
Sizing notes (editorial, not auto-calculated)
Crawl units are often rated in pints per day at crawl temperature/humidity conditions, which differ from basement or whole-house ratings. Manufacturers commonly size by crawl volume, leakage, groundwater influence, and whether the space is sealed. A sealed, lined crawl usually needs less capacity than an open, vented crawl with wet soil.
MoistureCost does not invent a pint calculator in Release 1. Use manufacturer sizing charts after an inspection establishes moisture load. Oversizing without sealing often wastes electricity; undersizing a chronically wet crawl will not “fix” water entry.
When a dehumidifier alone is the wrong buy
Standing water, failed grading, plumbing leaks, and major structural moisture need source correction—not a larger dehumidifier. A ground vapor barrier or sealed crawl may be prerequisites. The calculator prices the scope you select; it does not diagnose the moisture source.
How this shows up in encapsulation quotes
Full encapsulation on MoistureCost includes the dehumidifier package and outlet allowance by default. Sealed-crawl scopes do not, unless you toggle the dehumidifier add-on. Compare sealed vs full encapsulation on the same footprint to see how equipment moves planning totals before you rank contractor bids.
| Installed dehumidifier package | $1,200 – $2,800 | Typical $1,800 |
| Dedicated outlet allowance | $250 – $750 | Typical $450 |
| Combined typical (unit + outlet) | $2,250 | Before liner/sealing labor |
| Example | Low | Typical | High | Typical $/sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sealed crawl (no dehumidifier) | $3,900 | $6,500 | $11,000 | $5.42 |
| Full encapsulation (includes dehumidifier) | $5,350 | $8,850 | $14,750 | $7.37 |
| Sealed crawl + dehumidifier add-on | $5,350 | $8,850 | $14,750 | $7.37 |

FAQ
Is dehumidifier cost the same in every state?
The installed retail equipment package itself does not take a second labor-index markup. Outlet/electrical allowances follow cost-basis regional adjustment. Full project totals still differ by state because liner and sealing labor do.
Can I use a portable household dehumidifier?
Portables are sometimes used short-term, but crawl-rated units, proper drainage, and dedicated power are the usual long-term pattern for sealed crawls. Plan installed crawl equipment when comparing encapsulation quotes.
Does MoistureCost size pints automatically?
No. Release 1 prices an installed package assumption. Sizing remains an inspection and manufacturer-chart decision.
