How to compare crawl space contractor quotes
Two “encapsulation” quotes can differ by thousands of dollars because they are not the same job. This guide is a homeowner workflow for normalizing proposals before you compare price—using MoistureCost’s fixed scope vocabulary and the printable checklist below.
Rewrite every quote into the same three buckets
Ask each contractor to classify work as (1) ground vapor barrier only, (2) sealed crawl space, or (3) full encapsulation with dehumidifier. If they refuse to classify, treat the proposal as incomplete. Marketing language is not a scope.
Line-item the inclusions that move money
Require written yes/no answers for: liner thickness/product, wall liner, vent sealing, pier wraps, debris removal, insulation removal, dehumidifier brand/size, dedicated electrical, permits, disposal, access opening, and any drainage work. Missing lines are not free—they are undefined.
Separate diagnosis from installation
If the moisture source is unclear, pay for inspection first. Installing a full encapsulation package on the wrong problem wastes money. MoistureCost estimates price work; they do not certify that the work is the correct remedy.
Normalize exclusions
